What is plankton algae?

Plankton algae refers specifically to microscopic organisms that are either free-floating single cells or form small colonial groups within aquatic environments. These organisms play a crucial role in the ecosystem, as they are primary producers, forming the base of the food web in aquatic systems.

Unlike solid masses of algae, which are typically larger and can be attached to substrates, plankton algae exist in the water column, allowing them to be transported by currents. They differ fundamentally from large anchored seaweeds, which are macroscopic and fixed to the seabed, and from slow-moving aquatic creatures. Additionally, plankton are a key component of primary productivity in both freshwater and marine ecosystems, contributing to oxygen production and serving as food for various aquatic organisms.
